EU Representation for Consumer Electronics
Consumer electronics sold in the European Union are typically regulated under multiple EU product safety frameworks. Depending on the product type, these may include the Low Voltage Directive (LVD), the Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive (EMC), the Radio Equipment Directive (RED), and the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS). Where sector-specific legislation does not address certain consumer safety aspects, the General Product Safety Regulation (EU) 2023/988 (GPSR) may also apply.
EARP acts as your EU Authorized Representative (AR) and Responsible Person (RP), ensuring your electronics comply with the minimum regulatory representation obligations across the EU market.
Why Electronics Require Representation in the EU
Electronic products often involve risks related to electric shock, overheating, fire, mechanical injury, electromagnetic disturbance, and improper charging. Many also include software, connectivity, or AI-enabled functions that must work safely under foreseeable use conditions. EU authorities closely monitor this category because failures can lead to serious incidents, recalls, or Safety Gate notifications.
Manufacturers must prepare and maintain technical documentation, including correct labeling, user instructions, traceability data, demonstrating compliance with the applicable EU legislation. This documentation must be available to EU market surveillance authorities upon request. If not located in the Union, an EU-based RP must be assigned to support authorities when required.
